Chiefs agree to trade Dee Ford to 49ers for a bargain price

According to a report by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to parameters on a trade deal for outside linebacker Dee Ford.

Update: The 49ers have agreed to terms on a new five-year deal for Ford worth up to $87.5 million.

Instead, it looks like the Chiefs kept their word in regards to being open to a potential trade involving Ford, which appears to be the case for the 49ers.

Ford is coming off the best season of his career, piling up 13 sacks and forcing an NFL-leading seven fumbles.

If the Arizona Cardinals, who own the No. 1 pick in the draft, select Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa, that leaves the Niners with two logical options - to try to trade down in the draft, or to draft Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams or Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen. After all, the Chiefs made him expendable because they're switching from a 3-4 front to a 4-3 under new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Enter San Francisco, who, despite investing multiple first round picks into its defensive line in recent years, wasn't satisfied with their group of pass rushers.

Under head coach Joanne McCallie, the Blue Devils are 6-2 in their opening-round games in the ACC Tournament. Including the first UNC game, Duke, ranked No. 4 nationally, has gone 3-2 without Williamson in the lineup.

The 49ers were reportedly one of two teams interested in Ford, according to an earlier report by Rapoport.

Ford would likely play SAM linebacker in the 49ers' base defense, then moved down to defensive end in sub packages.

They have reportedly sought a second-round pick in exchange for the 27-year-old.

The interesting thing about a deal to the 49ers, though, is San Francisco also runs a 4-3 defense.

Adding Ford shouldn't keep the 49ers from finding another edge rusher this offseason. I think we're also looking for powerful players.
