Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates said that they regretted the decision, adding that worldwide law should be honored.

US President Donald Trump on Monday officially recognised Israeli sovereignty over the strategic border area, seized from Syria in 1967 and then annexed in 1981 in a move not recognised by the global community.

Trump, with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu looking over his shoulder during a visit to Washington, signed a proclamation on Monday officially granting USA recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

Saudi Arabia expressed its "firm rejection and condemnation" of President Donald Trump's executive order recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights.

He expressed regret for the move, saying that it constituted "one more step done by Washington in clear violation of worldwide law".

It called on the global community to comply with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolutions "instead of further destabilizing the region with futile attempts to justify Israel's acts against worldwide law".

"We raise our strong concerns about broader consequences of recognizing illegal annexation and also about the broader regional consequences", they said. Many other countries view Israel's control over the region, which Israel gained in the 1967 Six-Day War, as illegal under worldwide law.

On Friday, Syria wrote a separate letter urging the council to uphold resolutions demanding that Israel withdraw from the Golan. Pres. Trump signed a proclamation on March 25, with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu standing next to him in the White House, recognizing the Syrian Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

Trump formally recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights on Monday in a ceremony at the White House attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after announcing the policy shift last week.

Syria said the decision was a blatant attack on its sovereignty.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman added: "Trump does not have the right or the legal authority to legitimize the occupation".

Meanwhile the United Nations said its position on the Golan is unchanged. Syrian state TV aired live interviews from the southern village of Ein el-Tinneh with the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan in the background.

The Golan Heights were seized by Israel from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Syria's state-run news agency also said thousands of Syrians gathered in the streets in a mass protest of President Trump's decision.
