US Senate dismisses Green New Deal

Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., sponsored the Senate legislation on the Green New Deal, while freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., authored a companion House bill.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky scheduled the vote on the Green New Deal Tuesday saying it would force Democrats to take a stand on a plan that "might sound like a neat idea in places like San Francisco or New York" but would result in communities across the country being "absolutely crushed".

Ocasio-Cortez's proposal had 57 votes against it - with several Democrats even voting against it - while the remaining 43 Democrat Senators voted "present" because they did not want to go on record for having supported the extremist proposal, which is estimated to cost $93 trillion. Three Democrats and independent senator Angus King of ME ultimately joined all 53 Republicans in opposing the plan.

Schumer blasted McConnell for scheduling a "sham" vote on the Green New Deal right before members of the upper chamber will vote on a funding package for disaster relief, arguing climate change and natural disasters are unquestionably related.

"I gave the speech because I believe more human beings are the answer to our problems", Lee said on the show. Almost 200 countries have signed the pact, but President Donald Trump announced in mid-2017 he would withdraw the United States because it's a "bad deal" for the USA economy.

While the pair have yet to face off in person, Ocasio-Cortez addressed climate change in a committee hearing on Tuesday and her impassioned comments quickly went viral. She said its aim is create more jobs and guard the environment. "Science should not be partisan", she continued, highlighting the importance of tackling climate change on both sides of the aisle. Senator Mike Lee used drawings of dinosaurs and the cartoon character Aquaman riding a seahorse to treat the Green New Deal with what he mockingly called "the seriousness it deserves".

Lee's remarks enraged Democrats, who called climate change deadly serious, citing floods in the Midwest, wildfires in the West and hurricanes in the South.

Republican Rep. Jody Hice of Georgia plans to file a discharge petition in an attempt to bring the Green New Deal resolution to the House floor for a vote.

But while the unveiling of the outlines of a potential Green New Deal - no bill has actually been written - drew attention in February, some Democratic strategists say the program is too far to the left to make it out of Congress and onto the next president's desk.

An overhaul of the American transportation industry would also take fold, expanding electric vehicle use with the "goal to replace every combustion-engine vehicle" and building high-speed railways "at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary", according to a fact sheet released by Ocasio-Cortez's office during a rocky unveiling of the bill. It's unclear what version of the Deal the Senate voted on, however, as the text of the resolution disappeared from Ocasio-Cortez's website over a month ago after certain provisions sparked media outcry.

"Climate change is not a joke", said Sen.

Ocasio-Cortez fired back on Twitter. People are dying!" Climate Change Effect: "Oceans are Warming Faster Than Scientists Thought, Says New Research.

"McConnell tried to rush the #GreenNewDeal straight to the floor without a hearing", she wrote.
