Virginia Beats Texas Tech To Win The National Championship

Virginia has finally done it.

- Texas Tech and Virginia squared off for the NCAA basketball championship Monday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, and of all things to cause a stoppage in the game, it was a tortilla.

He had 15 points in the national semifinals against Auburn, including a critical late 3-pointer with the Cavaliers trailing by two-possessions followed by an even more pressure-packed moment when he was fouled on a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left.

"We were destined to win", Virginia redshirt sophomore De'Andre Hunter, who led all scorers with 27 points, said to Westwood One.

Hunter was outstanding all game.

Hunter set career highs in points and rebounds in his championship-winning performance. The Cavaliers boast the best defense in the nation and have conceded just 55.5 points per game this season, while Texas Tech has the third-best defense in the tournament, allowing a meager 58.5 points per game.

"He stepped up", said Virginia coach Tony Bennett.

Hunter said that he tried to be aggressive in the first half, but his shots weren't falling.

Here's everything you need to know about the game.

That humbling, history-making loss last season to Maryland-Baltimore County happened so the Cavaliers could stand at center court and celebrate this time around.

A school in a state better known for football - NFL MVP and former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes was in attendance Saturday and Monday and spoke to the team - Texas Tech and its Red Raiders have made a swift ascension on the hardwood.

Guy is not Virginia's only clutch free-throw shooter, by the way.

Some people lament the way the Red Raiders play. Their defenders were swarming, and the Cavaliers struggled on offense, punctuated by a Guy travel. To decide that was a more significant factor for possession than Hunter's action in poking the ball away violated the spirit, if not the letter, of basketball law. Salt actually started in place of Diakite in the Cavaliers' opening-round tournament game against Gardner-Webb, but he only played five minutes in that contest.

Virginia started the second half off hot.

Matt Mooney, who hit a 3-pointer on Texas Tech's previous trip, fought into the lane but was trapped before fading to his right for a jumper that kissed virtually every part of the iron and dropped home for a 73-70 Texas Tech lead.

The Cavaliers led 59-53 as Jerome called a timeout with 4:47 to go. You can theoretically bet on the Texas Tech moneyline and lock in profit no matter which team cuts down the nets. His versatility proved to be one of many factors that led the Cavaliers to their first ever National Championship.

Jerome missed a runner off the left side of the rim at the other end, sending Norense Odiase to the line after he was fouled collecting the Jerome miss. The Red Raiders are in your face. Dre' (Hunter) made (Culver) work to get shots.

Virginia has used the historic loss as motivation all season and is on the cusp of erasing it with the biggest victory in program history.

"We have a saying: 'The most faithful win, ' and these guys stayed so faithful", Bennett said. As Tom Izzo put it, "They beat us at our own game".

The men's team has never made a Final Four until this year ... in fact they've only made the Elite Eight twice, the first one coming last year. UCLA, at this writing, has a vacancy, and, one might venture to say that, on paper, Beard certainly looks just as good if not better now than Steve Alford did in 2013 or than Ben Howland did in 2003. "I'm just thinking this is a dream come true".

Kyle Guy added 24 points, and Ty Jerome dished eight assists. Mulkey could end up becoming the first woman to coach a Division I men's team, and center Kalani Brown is a lock to be an early pick in the WNBA draft.
