Fordham Student Dies After Banned 'Rite of Passage'

A senior at Fordham University died on Sunday after falling from a clock tower on campus.

According to NBC New York, Monfries was with a group of friends around 3 a.m. Sunday when they chose to climb the inside of the tower to take in the view of the campus and surrounding city.

A 22-year-old Fordham University was crtically injured as she climbed the school's bell tower early Sunday with other students to snap photos.

The 22-year-old had gone to the tower with friends about 3am to get a better view of the city, according to police.

"The student apparently climbed into the clock tower with friends", Fordham spokesman Bob Howe said. Another student, Anne, told the New York Post: "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

In a statement, Fordham University said they student's family has been notified, and university officials are investigating how the students gained access to the tower, which is supposed to be locked and off limits.

She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious condition.

School officials said Keating Hall and the door to its clock tower are always locked and only accessible by authorized staff members, and this was the first time anyone had fallen from the structure.

Emergency responders later found her on the ground with trauma to her head and neck, according to the station.

Access to the tower is restricted, a university spokeswoman told the Times.

Monfries fell over 12m from the bell tower's staircase. But some said they have never heard of being allowed inside the tower. Monfries was due to graduate in May. They usually go late at night at around 1 or 2 a.m.to drink and see the view, ' Priscilla Morales told The New York Times.

Her death was announced to students in an email sent by the school, which described the "unimaginable loss" suffered by Ms Monfries' family, friends and school community.
